The nation’s secretaries of state are about to face their most consequential moment in office. Just as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the nation’s governors to forge ad-hoc, science-driven responses in the absence of a national strategy, the same scenario is about to play out for the nation’s secretaries of state in the run-up to the November elections.

A significant bulwark against such chaos is the U.S. Postal Service. If the election in November is to proceed effectively, the USPS must immediately begin earnest preparations to handle the influx of election-related mail.
