When President Dwight Eisenhower championed the construction of an interstate highway system in the 1950s, he stressed the military value of a modern road network. As former allied commander in Europe during World War Two, Eisenhower had seen how Germany’s autobahn supported the movement of troops and supplies. Other backers of the interstate system said it would facilitate evacuation of cities threatened with nuclear attack.
